Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) says it has completed the installation of exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbers) on two more of its vessels, Norwegian Sun and Norwegian Jade.

As Ship & Bunker has previously reported, the retrofit installation is part of NCL's 2014 plan to install 28 exhaust gas scrubbers across six of its ships, including Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Dawn, Norwegian Jewel, Norwegian Gem, Norwegian Pearl, and Norwegian Sun.

"Early in 2014, Norwegian Cruise Line was the first cruise line to commit to retrofitting six vessels and has exceeded that commitment with now eight total ships," said NCL Wednesday.

The vessels' Yara Marine Technologies (Yara Marine) hybrid scrubber system, which consists of five scrubbers - one for each engine - is able to operate in dry mode, open loop, or closed loop, and is capable of reducing sulfur and particulate emissions into the air by as much as 99 percent and 85 percent, respectively.

"With the installation of the new technology into two more ships, Norwegian Cruise Line is continuing to exemplify its commitment of applying safe and conservative environmental practices across the fleet," said NCL.

In December, NCL announced the completion of the installation of an exhaust gas scrubber system on the Norwegian Pearl and Norwegian Gem.
