Ships docking at the Kenyan port of Mombassa will be expected to switch to electrical shorepower.

Using electric shorepower, a process known as cold-ironing, is a way of reducing emissions from using heavy fuel oill burned by ships.

The policy initiative comes from the Kenya Port Authority which has said it has constructed power substations at the port ready to connect to the berths and power the vessels, local news provider The Star reports.

Cold-ironing is acknowledged as a reliable method of reducing emissions in port from ships at berth and has been adopted by port authorities around the world.
