Statoil ASA (Statoil) has circulated a requirement for as many as two very large gas carriers (VLGCs) with an option for the vessels to be built with liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)-bunkering capabilities, TradeWinds reports.

Statoil is reported have expressed flexibility on delivery dates into 2019, when the company is said to be looking to replace existing tonnage set to come off hire.

The news seems to add to a recent push by Statoil toward the use of LPG bunkers after Astomos Energy Corporation (Astomos) announced in June that it had agreed with Statoil to conclude a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for further study of the application of LPG as a marine fuel.

In March, Ship & Bunker reported that Astomos was intending to work with Japan's other top LPG importers, possibly within the next year, to explore the feasibility of establishing LPG bunkering ahead of 2020.
