Coatings manufacturer Jotun Thursday announced it will supply its fuel saving antifouling coatings concept to further Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) ships.

Jotun said MSC had decided to apply Jotun's SeaQuantum X200 coatings, in conjunction with its HPS concept, after successful trials showed reductions in bunker consumption.

Among the 12 vessels to be selected for application of the coatings is MSC Oscar, the world's largest container ship.

MSC's Technical Office in Italy confirmed initial results from tests conducted on the 8,772 deadweight tonne (dwt) MSC Adelaide, built in 2013.

"SeaQuantum X200 has shown to be an effective antifouling technology to lower fuel costs and associated carbon emissions, consistent with MSC's commitment to a healthier supply chain," said MSC.

"We valued the quality of Jotun's technical service during all phases of the project and have since chosen SeaQuantum X200 HPS for a number of other vessels."

It is understood that approximately 60 percent of MSC's fleet of 500 ships is coated with Jotun products, following more than 20 years of working together.

Jotun said its HPS concept "combines premium marine coatings, priority technical service and on-board monitoring tools to measure hull performance over time."

"That data allows owners to make more informed decisions about marine coatings and ship operations, and help them distinguish between competing coatings suppliers and quantify the impact of anti-foulings on fuel usage."

This week, DNV GL announced it was set to class the MSC Oscar.
