Deltamarin Ltd (Deltamarin) Monday said naval architects from the company's office in Gdansk have developed a liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered multi-purpose inland vessel called DeltaBreaker.

The DeltaBreaker design, which includes features of a tug, icebreaker, and pusher, as well as some other functionalities, has a low resistance hull shape and the ability to break ice up to 0.6 m thick.

"One of the specific characteristics of the DeltaBreaker design is the implementation of the Articulated Tug-Barge (ATB) system connection. It allows the pushing of compatible barges on inland and coastal waters," said Deltamarin.

"This opens up the possibility to further develop an efficient design for such barges that can be used for carrying bulk cargo, containers, oil/products, accommodation modules and as LNG transportation/bunkering facilities."

Deltamarin says the current vessel design allows operations on waterways of international (CEMT) class IV, but smaller versions can also be developed.

"With all the features of a good product, we hope to see the ships of the DeltaBreaker design family populating the rivers and canals around the world very soon," said Deltamarin.

In July, Deltamarin announced that it had signed contracts to provide engineering and construction support services to Xiamen Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd (XSI) for Viking Line's newbuild LNG-fuelled vessel.
