Royal Dutch Shell plc (Shell) today announced that Shell Marine will provide Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) with integrated marine solutions, including lubricants and services for OOCL Hong Kong - the world's largest container ship by carrying capacity.

"Protecting, maintaining and optimising marine engine performance at a time when engine technology is fast developing can be challenging and complex, particularly during a period when fuel selection and vessel speed requirements are also up for discussion," said Shell.

The vessel features MAN Diesel & Turbo's (MDT) G-type engines, which Shell notes requires close oil performance monitoring and technical support and the use of high quality cylinder oil.

"As a supplier, we have considerable experience with MDT's G-type engines. It was crucial that we shared our knowledge with OOCL at the outset, and that they could offer feedback in the dialogue that ultimately led to the optimal product selection,"  said Jan Toschka, Shell Marine's Executive Director.

Shell LubeMonitor is also noted to have been deployed onboard OOCL Hong Kong, which includes a cylinder oil condition monitoring service that uses shipboard and laboratory analysis to support the optimisation of engine performance and predictive maintenance.

Further, the system utilises a new software package known as Marine Connect, which is designed to transfer onboard analysis data easily and securely to Shell support personnel.

"Working towards the selection of the right cylinder oils is a collaborative process that needs to satisfy engine-maker approvals, as well as the client's requirement for proven performance," said Toschka.

"Our technical support needs to be based on the same principles, so that ship operators can monitor the condition of the oil and equipment in the field, and plan effectively when remedial action is necessary."

In April, Ship & Bunker reported that Shell Marine had launched a new Marine Integrated Lubrication and Expert Solutions (MILES) programme.
