ABS: Potential for Greater Efficiency is Not in Doubt
Maritime classification company ABS says it has released a guide to help ship owners and operators choose appropriate energy efficiency measures, and that the potential for savings was "not in doubt."
The Ship Energy Efficiency Measures Advisory helps with the analysis of economic and technical factors involved in reducing fuel costs and emissions.
"Energy efficiency measures are probably the number one topic for owners constructing new vessels or seeking to optimize existing tonnage," said Howard Fireman, ABS's vice president of Operational and Environmental Performance (OEP).
"The potential to achieve greater efficiency is not in doubt, but owners and operators need support in evaluating which options are most suitable for their vessels."
The advisory explains options for both newbuild vessels and existing ships, including hull form optimisation, devices to improve propulsion efficiency and reduce hull resistance, improvements to ship machinery and systems, and operational measures like voyage performance management and hull/propeller condition monitoring.
The document also explains the impact of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO)'s Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) on newbuilds.
ABS offers advisories on a number of related issues, including the use of scrubbers to reduce emissions.
