Gibraltar Port Authority (GPA) has announced in an emailed press release that it has updated its Oil Spill Contingency Plan.

GPA said the update followed an in-depth review to assess the routine activities that take place within British Gibraltar Territorial waters.

"[This underpins] Gibraltar's reputation as a centre of maritime excellence," said GPA.

The port authority said the contingency plan is a "vital tool" in the effective coordination of oil spills at the Mediterranean port.

"The environmental protection of our waters is paramount," said Paul Balban, minister with responsibility for the port.

"In keeping with this policy, this revised plan complements the GPA's wider capabilities in ensuring that our environmental credentials remain second to none."

Gibraltar last year came in for criticism over bunkering plans for the port through a period of strained relations with Spain, but it said it did nothing to breach EU environmental rules.
