The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) plans to start a bunkering business soon, Nigeria Business News reports.

"This is a huge business we were not taking advantage of," said Group Managing Director Andrew Yakubu.

"We need the expertise of reputable bunkering firms.

"We have embarked on a study of the system; and very soon, we will take advantage of it."

Yakubu said the president and security agencies support the effort, which is intended to allow vessels operating in Nigerian waters to refuel locally instead of going to Senegal, Cape Verde, or Cote D'Ivoire.

Nigeria legalised bunkering in January in an effort to stop theft and illegal bunkering activity and increase revenues.
