Crowley Maritime Corporation (Crowley) Tuesday announced the launch of El Coquí - said to be one of the world's first ConRo ships to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG).

El Coquí, which is part of the company's new Commitment Class ships, was launched at Vt Halter Marine Inc (Vt Halter Marine) in Pascagoula, Mississippi on Monday.

"This was a special day for Crowley, VT Halter Marine and all of the men and women who designed, and who are constructing, this world-class ship," said Tom Crowley, chairman and CEO at Crowley.

"We are extremely appreciative of all the work that has been accomplished so far and look forward to the successful delivery of El Coquí later this year and her sister ship, Taíno, in the first half of next year."

El Coquí is now set to proceed to final topside construction and testing before entering service in the second half of 2017.
