Seattle-based Glosten has announced that it will design a RoPax ferry for Washington's Skagit County, replacing the M/V Guemes with what is targetted to be an all-electric vessel.

"What excites us about the Skagit vessel is the opportunity to shape the future of transit for a community," said William Moon III, Project Manager and Design Lead at Glosten.

"We are committed to supporting the county's vision of an all-electric ferry, and are ready to put in the work to develop a vessel that can serve this county for another forty years."

Glosten says it will quantitatively evaluate propulsion system options, including electric, hybrid, and geared diesel for the new vessel.

"This study will give the county the information needed to be confident in their selection of a propulsion system," said Glosten.

M/V Guemes has provided service between Anacortes and Guemes Island since 1979, and is nearing the end of its economic useful life.

In June, it was reported that Glosten had completed the design of a new passenger hybrid electric ferry for Washington's Kitsap Transit.
