Wärtsilä Corp. says two Crowley Maritime Corp. liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered container RoRo vessels that it helped to design will combine the ability to meet strict environmental guidelines with high performance requirements.

"This vessel design raises the bar for merchant shipping, not only for US flagged ships, but globally," said Rick Zubic, vice president of business development for VT Halter Marine, which is building the ships.

"We are proud to be taking this bold step in bringing environmentally viable designs to the market, with Wärtsilä as a key partner."

The ships, which will be able to carry more than 350 private cars plus containers, use a design that enables them to carry 20-foot and 40-foot containers, as well as 45-foot and 53-foot wide body high cube containers used in the American market.

The vessels will operate between Florida and Puerto Rico.

Crowley has said the ships, scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2017, will allow it to serve the Puerto Rican market with fast transit times.
