EPA Issues $5 Million in Grants to Reduce Marine Diesel Emissions
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced that this year's Diesel Emission Reduction Act (DERA) program is offering $5 million to decrease engine emissions at American ports that it has deemed as having poor air quality.
The plan targets cities of poor air quality, with large, metropolitan areas often also the location of the country's busiest ports, the EPA said earlier this year.
The EPA's grant is aimed towards implementing retrofit and idle-reduction technologies, along with early replacement of engines.
Equipment such as drayage trucks used in cargo handling may also qualify.
Public port authorities or state and local government organizations from cities on the EPA's selected list are eligible.
Other groups, such as community groups or terminal operators, are also able to apply if partnered with an eligible agency.
Funds given cannot be used to fund emission reduction projects that are mandated by federal law.
Applications are due December 11, 2014.
Last year's DERA offered $9 million under the program and awarded $4.2 million to 6 U.S. ports.
