Plans to develop a port, along with bunkering facilities, in the Azhikode coastal area is progressing in the Indian state of Kerala, Indian media reports

According to reports, Indian Minister for Shipping and Ports K Babu has revealed plans to shift 20 percent of cargo movement on roads to marine shipping, a move which will be reportedly supported by the Azhikode port and the development of six other minor ports.

The Azhikode port facilities are now said to be being built under a private-public partnership, with the dredging phase having begun now that land acquisition is almost complete.

Once complete, it is expected that the port complex will boast bunkering services, as well as a cargo wharf, container terminal, and dry dockyard.

Calls for a bunkering facility in the area were reported last year from various industry players.

At the time, it was reported that Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had commented that the country was not fully taking advantage of India's coastal shipping and waterways.
