China Fast Ferry Promises 20% Fuel Reduction
A newly delivered Chinese fast ferry is capable of reducing fuel expenses by 20 percent when fully loaded, according to its designer, CoCo Yachts.
The ship, Peng Xing 15, is the first of five similar ferries ordered by Shenzhen Peng Xing Ferry Co. (Peng Xing), which operates fast ferries between Shenzhen, Hong Kong, and Macao.
The company will also receive a sister ship to the Peng Xing 15 and three other ferries with slightly different passenger layouts.
The ferry operator's specifications called for the new vessel to operate at up to 31.5 knots, with just 2x 1080 kW of installed power, something CoCo Yachts said presented a challenge, but the vessel was ultimately able to be built 5 percent lighter than estimated thanks to weight-control efforts by CoCo Yachts and shipbuilder AFAI Southern Shipyard, and its average speed at full load conditions was recorded at 32.8 knots.
In addition to the Peng Xing ferries, CoCo Yachts has vessels under construction for Rio De Janeiro state that will carry up to 2,000 passengers each, according to its website.
