The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) is looking for another $1 billion of investment for its Hambantota Port, the Sri Lankan online news service Lanka Business Online has reported.

"Our intention from the second request for investment proposals is to attract $1 billion," Sri Lanka Ports Authority chairman Dr. Priyath Bandu Wickrema told the Sri Lanka Ports, Trade and Logistics Conference and Exhibition at the Hilton, Colombo Tuesday.

According to officials, the request for proposals will close next month.

Last year Wickrema said 15 opportunities worth $1 billion had been identified.

To date, 11 of those with a value of $800 million have been realised and include a cement packing plant, sugar refinery, a plastics plant, and warehouses.

Last month Sri Lanka said as a result of the investment already made it expected more Ro-Ro vessels to call at Hambantota Port.
