Preparations are continuing for two new dual fuel MDO-liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessels being built for Scottish ferry operator Caledonian MacBrayne (CalMac), as Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) has announced that Wallace Stone Consulting Engineers (Wallace Stone) will complete design development work ahead of vessel delivery.

As Ship & Bunker has previously reported, the two ferries, worth £97 million ($123.39 million), are being built at Ferguson Marine Engineering in Glasgow.

Under the newly announced contract, Wallace Stone will identify harbour improvements required at Lochmaddy and Tarbert in order to support the newbuilds' operation.

CMAL, Comhairle Nan Eilean Siar, and Wallace Stone will then decide upon a preferred course of action with which to carry out necessary design and construction.

"The new dual-fuel ferries will require some infrastructure improvements at existing harbours," said Brian Sydney, Senior Civil Engineer at CMAL.

"Initially, we will be investigating the full extent of the works required with a view to agreeing preferred options for the works. This will include consideration of how and when the works will be delivered in advance of the introduction of the new vessels."

Wallace Stone’s work is slated to begin this month, and is anticipated to be completed in May 2017.

Last month, Ship & Bunker reported that Parker Bestobell Marine (Parker Bestobell) had won a contract to provide cryogenic globe and check valves to the two new dual fuel vessels.
