Orkney-based community renewables project Surf 'n' Turf, which is intended to develop clean fuel for ships, Wednesday marked its official launch to the public

"Surf 'n' Turf is a ground breaking project, thanks to how it sources its energy and what it does with it – aiming to open up hydrogen as a clean fuel for use in road and sea transport as well as for power and heating," explained the project.

The project was unveiled to the public at a launch event in Kirkwall, which brought together over 75 guests and saw Paul Wheelhouse MSP – the Scottish Minister for Business, Innovation & Energy – cut a ribbon at the new hydrogen compound on Kirkwall Pier.

Today, many of those invited guests were set to travel to Eday to observe how hydrogen is produced from tidal and wind energy.
