The Port of Marseille Fos will invest €360 million ($440.5 million) into transforming itself into an alternate European gateway against more northern competitors, the port authority announced

The plan is to "offer clients a dynamic Euro-Mediterranean logistics and industrial cluster," according to the port.

The investments are envisioned to take place over the next four years, which will include construction and upgrades to container activities in both the Marseille and Fos harbour areas, cruise ship repair and ro-ro services at Marseille, and initiatives into the liquefied natural gas (LNG) and dry bulk trades.

Dredging is also planned to accommodate ships of up to 16,000 TEU, while passenger terminals which serve as ferry links with Corsica and Africa will also be upgraded.

"The strategic plan is designed to preserve traditional activities including the oil and petro-chemical sectors in Fos and national/international ro-pax services based in Marseille," said the company, along with developing the area in a way that maintains environmental sustainability.

Elsewhere, the Port of Gibraltar also said earlier this year that it would be working hard to maintain the competitiveness of its port in the Mediterranean.
