Ships loading liquified natural gas (LNG) bunkers at the Estonian port of Tallinn can expect to pay lower port fees.

A 4% discount on fees is to encourage the take up of the alternative bunker fuel, according to the port authority.

"Starting in 2018, all ships that use LNG as their primary fuel can apply for a discount of four percent on tonnage fees when calling at harbours of the Port of Tallinn," the authority said in a statement.

In addition, the port said it supports other initiatives and investments aimed at adopting cleaner technologies in the shipping sector.

"Unlike many other European Union ports, the port of Tallinn also provides incentives for ships that have invested in scrubbers for reducing sulphur compounds in emissions, and accepts the waste generated by scrubbers without charging additional fees," it said.

The port also intends to introduce the environmental ship index energy performance system which covers a range of emissions as well as the adoption of cold-ironing for ships at berth.
