A liquified natural gas (LNG) bunker terminal is to be built at the Danish port of Frederikshavn.

The terminal, which forms part of the port's expansion plan, will be built under phase one of a plan backed by consortium Georgie Trade and Investment Denmark (GTID).

"Northern Denmark is by far the most strategic location in the Scandinavian region," said Amy Ball, who heads up GTID.

The second phase of the plan aims to bring Denmark into a leadership position in Nordic and northern European regions for LNG storage.

While LNG is considered to be a viable alternative to oil based marine fuels, a major constraint against take up of the fuel by ship operators has been the lack of fuelling infrastructure.
