The High Commissioner of the Republic in New Caledonia today said that, five days after its grounding, the container ship Kea Trader is in stable condition on the Durand Reef, with crews working to prepare the vessel for debunkering.

The newbuild vessel, which is owned by Lomar Shipping, ran aground on July 12 about 100 kilometres southeast of the island of Mare.

Media reports suggest that some 700 tonnes of fuel onboard the vessel's tanks is set to be pumped out.

There is said to be 11 experts from Ardent Oceania Salvage onboard the vessel to assist crew with preparations for the operation.

The government authority confirms that no external pollution has been detected.
