The Hellenic Coast Guard says clean-up efforts for an oil spill are ongoing after the oil tanker Agia Zoni II sank off the Port of Piraeus on Sunday.

The vessel is said to have had 2,200 tonnes of fuel oil and 370 tonnes of marine gas oil onboard when it sunk.

Under the command of Greek authorities, an oil spill response vessel the Aktea OSRV - contracted by the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) from the Greek company Environmental Protection Engineering (EPE) - has been on-site since 11:00 a.m. local time on Wednesday.

Satellite imaging from EMSA has also been requested by Greek authorities to assess the extent of the pollution.

"This assistance to the Greek authorities clearly demonstrates the added advantage Member States can have by requesting additional response assets which are available across the European coastline and can be mobilised quickly. It also highlights the responsiveness of EMSA's satellite image service," said Markku Mylly, EMSA Executive Director.
