Greek Captain Handed Two-Year Sentence for Fuel Oil Smuggling
The captain of Lassea, the ship embroiled in the Agia Zoni ll oil spill off the Greek coastline, has been handed a two-year suspended sentence by a Piraeus court.
The sentence was given on September 28, according to local news provider the Greek Observer.
The tanker Agia Zoni ll sank on September 10 loaded with around 2,500 metric tonnes (mt) of fuel oil and marine gasoil in its cargo tanks, some of which spilt causing environmental damage.
The tanker Lassea was involved in the clean up operation but the ship's captain and chief mechanic were subsequently arrested on fuel smuggling charges.
Only the captain was found guilty of carrying mixed oil without documentation while unpaid customs duties on fuel oil carried by Lassea were calculated at EUR15,500 ($18,000), according to the report.
