The captain and chief mechanic of a ship involved in clean-up operations for a spill from the sunken tanker Agia Zoni II have been arrested on fuel smuggling charges, Associated Press reports.

The Merchant Marine Ministry Wednesday said the two individuals were arrested after undeclared fuel was found onboard the tanker Lassea, which was being use to recover oil from Agia Zoni II.

Ministry officials said clean-up efforts were suspended Tuesday following the arrests, and a replacement vessel was set to be selected today.

Oil slicks stemming from the wrecked Agia Zoni II are now reported to extend from the island of Salamina along the entire length of the Athens coast.

As Ship & Bunker has reported, Agia Zoni II sank on September 10, loaded with 2,200 tonnes of fuel oil and 370 tonnes of marine gas oil at the time.
