BG Freight Line Orders Four Fuel Efficiency Container Ships for the Irish Sea
In an effort to control costs due to tighter environmental regulations, short sea shipper B.G. Freight Line B.V. (BG Freight Line) has ordered four new fuel efficient container ships specifically designed for operation on the Irish Sea, JOC reports.
The four so-called "Ireland max" 1,004 TEU container ships, which will be built at Zhoushan Changhong International Shipyard, are said to be slated for delivery in 2018.
The vessels are set to have a fuel efficient double stroke engines, as well as wet scrubber systems in order to meet environmental control area (ECA) regulations.
"As well as helping us, and our customers, to reduce their carbon emissions and costs, these custom vessels have a number of innovations to help keep us at the forefront of feeder services in the Irish Sea," said Koert Luitwieler, shipping director at BG Freight Line.
The vessels are said to be example of how ship designs are being used to reduce operator costs through improved fuel efficiency, while still meeting tightening emissions regulations around the world.
Last year, Ship & Bunker reported that ships destined for the UK could save money by using ports on the Welsh coast due to a "loophole" that omitted the Irish Sea from Emission Control Area (ECA) rules.
