Wärtsilä Corporation (Wärtsilä) today announced that it has been awarded a contract by Hamina LNG Oy (Hamina LNG) to supply a liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal at the Port of Hamina, Finland, which will include bunkering facilities.

"We wanted to create a terminal infrastructure which would provide bunkering for vessels as well as diversify the country’s sources of gas supply," said Peter van Buuren, CEO, Hamina LNG.

"Wärtsilä’s technology fits our need, and they have the best local knowledge and experience as an EPC provider in harsh weather conditions. Wärtsilä offered us full EPC capabilities as well as a unique know-how in gas processing."

As Ship & Bunker has reported, Hamina LNG is a joint venture between Haminan Energia Oy (Haminan Energia) and Alexela Group OÜ (Alexela), that is expected to receive LNG tankers up to 25,000 cubic metres (cbm).

The new contract with Wärtsilä comes a year after Hamina LNG issued an international tender for the construction of the LNG import terminal.

"The Hamina project is part of Finland’s plans to create a network of medium scale LNG terminals with the aim of offering gas supply to the local industry and LNG for ship bunkering, and ensuring an additional source of gas for Finland.

"The project will bring a significant reduction in CO2 emissions by providing cleaner fuel for transport and industry. At the same time, the LNG infrastructure will increase the security of supply in Finland with gas grid connection," said Timo Mahlanen, Senior Business Development Manager, Wärtsilä Energy Solutions.

The LNG terminal - set to be the first LNG receiving terminal in Finland connected to Finnish gas grid - is expected to commence operations in August 2020.
