The Port of Gibraltar says it is reducing tonnage dues by 5 percent for "sustainable ships" certified under the Green Award program, beginning today, April 1, 2013.

"The Port of Gibraltar's view fits very well with the Green Award's Philosophy," said Green Award Managing Director Jan Fransen.

"When such a major bunker port as Gibraltar practices its Corporate Social Responsibility through participating in the Green Award scheme, it does make a difference and motivates safe and environmentally conscious shipping."

Twenty-five port authorities participate in the Green Award program, according to the program's website.

In February, the Port of Rotterdam announced that it would provide dues discounts to ocean-going LNG tankers with Green Award certificates, becoming the first port to do so.
