DFDS has announced it has ordered two more bunker-saving large freight ships, designed in collaboration with naval architects Knud E. Hansen and set to be built at China's Jinling Shipyard.

The ships will be among the first DFDS-owned vessels built according to the new Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) regulations;

DFDS says that, overall, the vessels will reduce energy consumption and emissions by more than 25 percent per transported trailer compared to current standards.

"As the ships are also being built with a scrubber and equipped with a ballast water treatment system and a number of energy-enhancing initiatives, they represent a whole new generation of environmentally friendly ro-ro ships," said Niels Smedegaard, CEO of DFDS.

"The ships form part of our new building programme that underpins our ability to deliver the transport capacity required by our customers and our continuous pursuit of efficiency improvements," said Smedegaard.

The two new orders come in addition to two other sister ships previously ordered by DFDS to service freight customers across the North Sea.

The first two of the newbuilds are expected to be delivered in early 2019, while the latest orders are expected in early 2020.

In May, Ship & Bunker reported that ABB had announced that shaft generators would be installed on the first two of the four vessels now on order by DFDS, enabling the main engines to operate at a wider and more optimal speed range, boosting efficiency in the process.
