HHI Develops New LNG Containment System
Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) of South Korea says it has developed a new membrane containment system for liquefied natural gas (LNG) that can be used in LNG bunkering systems and LNG carriers.
The system features dual metal barriers and insulation systems capable of withstanding sloshing loads and other stresses, and has received design approval from classification societies including the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and Det Norske Veritas (DNV).
The system uses insulation panels with low density polyurethane foam and glass fiber composite material to reduce the boil off rate of stored LNG by more than 10 percent compared with conventional panels, and to prevent damage to areas like tank corners.
HHI plans to commercialise the containment system, which it says could be used for LNG floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) operations and LNG-powered vessels as well as carriers and bunkering systems, after a final performance test.
HHI said it could combine the new membrane system with its Lobe-Bundle Tank technology, which uses ring-shaped plates instead of flat plates, to build better LNG carriers.
