TMC Compressors (TMC) Monday announced that it is launching a boil-off gas compressor intended for use on vessels that utilise liquefied natural gas (LNG) as ship fuel.

The compressor system is set to be unveiled at this week's Nor-Shipping event in Oslo, and is noted by TMC to offer both financial and environmental benefits for users.

"By compressing the boil-off gas to the required pressure in order to supply it as fuel directly into the ship's engine, you will have an optimal system with regards to energy efficiency," said Hans Petter Tanum, TMC's director of sales and business development.

The new system captures boil-off gas from onboard LNG fuel tanks and compresses it before injecting it into the ship's engine as fuel.

"Using LNG as fuel is becoming increasingly popular because it has lower levels of harmful emissions to air compared with conventional marine fuels. However, the biggest bonus with boil-off gas is that you are able to reduce the vessel's fuel costs quite significantly," said Tanum.

TMC, which notes it will offer a range of boil-off gas compressors, from 30 kW to 450 kW, says its marine boil-off gas compressor system can also be used for ships that feature dual-fuel propulsion.
