The efforts of non-governmental organisations (NGO) to exert pressure on shipping to agree to tougher carbon dioxide targets sooner that it would like has not gone unnoticed by the shipping industry.

The impact of marine environmentalist grouping, the Clean Shipping Coalition (CSC), is acknowledged by maritime trade publication Lloyd's List which has it at number six in its top ten in marine regulation for 2017.

"The consortium of non-governmental organisations advocating sharper and faster decarbonisation rates continued to pressure the industry this year and exert influence over its reputation," the publication said.

It added: "NGO reports, studies and suggestions do not go unnoticed, especially by those outside the maritime sector, who look at [shipping] as another part of the global economy that needs to do its fair share in the fight against climate change."

CSC includes Brussels-based Transport & Environment.
