Carnival Corporation & plc (Carnival) Thursday announced that it has signed an agreement with the Port Authority of Barcelona to construct and operate its second private cruise terminal at the port, and says it will also be adding two ships to its China fleet in 2016.

Carnival says that the terminal, which will involve an investment of more than €30 million ($32.97 million) investment, will launch in 2018 and see a "significant expansion" in the company's presence in the Port of Barcelona.

"As an all-new, next-generation cruise facility, the terminal will be designed to enhance the overall cruise experience for Carnival Corporation's guests," said Michel Nestour, managing director of Carnival's terminal operations in Barcelona.

The Port of Barcelona, which is said to be used by seven of Carnival's 10 cruise line brands, saw 764 cruise calls and over 2.36 million passenger movements at its six current terminals during 2014.

"We are excited about our ongoing partnership with Carnival Corporation to enhance our facilities at the Port of Barcelona and continue our momentum as one of the top cruise destinations in the world," said Sixte Cambra, president of the Port Authority of Barcelona.

Last year Carnival spent just over $2 billion on bunkers, and In December said it hopes to slash that spend by $495 million in 2015 - a goal it already looks set to better by a significant margin.

China Fleet Expansion

Elsewhere, two ships will be added to the Carnival's China fleet in 2016, which are said to bring the company's total ships based in China to six and add an additional 58 percent to Carnival's capacity in the region.

"Carnival Corporation's fleet of six China-based ships will include expanded offerings from its two leading brands in the market – Costa Cruises and Princess Cruises – that are each adding one new ship to meet growing cruise demand in China," said the company in the statement.

"Across the two brands, Carnival Corporation will have three year-round ships and three seasonal ships in the market, representing the largest cruise presence in China in 2016."

In June, Carnival announced that it has signed a multi-billion dollar contract to build four "next-generation" liquid natural gas (LNG)-powered cruise ships.
