Hempel A/S (Hempel) and DNV GL Monday renewed their declaration of support for ISO 19030 - the new hull and propeller performance criteria - highlighting their continued efforts to work together to embrace the standard that they say promotes fuel savings within the shipping industry.

As Ship & Bunker has previously reported, Draft ISO 19030, which sets standards and methods for measuring hull and propeller performance, and defines performance indicators for hull and propeller maintenance, repair, and retrofit activities, is drawing nearer to publication.

"The new standard will have a positive impact on the maritime sector, allowing our customers to document and measure the contribution that premium coatings make on reducing a vessel’s operational costs through fuel savings," said Christian Ottosen, Vice President of Marine for Hempel.

"More advanced analytics, such as that delivered by Hempel together with DNV GL’s ECO Insight, will give our customers the opportunity to benchmark their fleet and further maximise their energy efficiency strategies."

Hempel, which is noted to have been "deeply" involved with the development of ISO 19030, says the standard will provide the base for a transparent framework for vessel performance analysis, and is expected to become support the enhanced management of hulls and propellers for fuel efficiency.

"We value our collaboration with Hempel and welcome the opportunity to measure the actual performance of hull coatings using our ECO Insight solution," said Dr. Torsten Büssow, Director of Fleet Performance Management at DNV GL – Maritime.

"ECO Insight complies with the ISO 19030 standard, allows for more advanced analytics, and can therefore offer ship owners and operators a holistic overview of their hull coating’s efficiency."

In December, Hempel signed an agreement with DNV GL, intended to see them work together on defining "clear, comprehensible, and verifiable" analytics to monitor and asses hull and propeller performance in order to optimise customers' fuel savings and reduce environmental impacts.
