Weathernews Inc. (Weathernews) Thursday announced a new global Emission Status Monitoring Service it says is intended to provide total support for compliance with the European Union (EU) Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) regulation.

As Ship & Bunker has reported, the MRV regulation requires shipping companies to submit ship-specific monitoring plans to verifiers for approval by the end of the August 2017, with per-voyage monitoring set to start on January 1, 2018.

Weathernews stresses that the Emission Status Monitoring Service is not an EU MRV certification service, but rather a support service for shipping companies' EU MRV compliance.

"The company will fully utilise the service infrastructure and databases developed in support of the shipping industry for approximately half a century to reduce the workload of shipping companies in compliance with EU MRV," explains Weathernews.

In July, Weathernews, which provides weather routing services, port forecasts, and other weather-driven risk communication services aimed at reducing bunker costs, opened a new subsidiary in Moscow, Weathernews Rus LLC., to support "more cost effective voyages" across the Arctic's Northern Sea Route (NSR).
