The enforcement landscape will "not play a part in deciding which solution NORDEN should aim for" in relation to the 0.50 percent global cap on sulfur in bunkers set to come into force in 2020, Alex Hjortnæs, Senior Newbuilding Manager at Dampskibsselskabet NORDEN A/S (NORDEN), has told Ship & Bunker.

"We will comply with the regulations no matter what," explained Hjortnæs, adding: "NORDEN supports robust and transparent enforcement of the regulations to ensure a level playing field for all."

Hjortnæs says NORDEN is looking at both scrubber solutions and switching to low sulfur fuel , but has yet to decide which path to take to comply with the tightening regulations.

"NORDEN is currently investigating which solutions best enable the Company to comply with the 0.5 percent global sulphur cap," said Hjortnæs.

"We will choose the solutions which, overall, make most sense for a globally operating company like NORDEN. Both the practical and financial consequences of the different solutions are being analysed."

In April, Nicolai Bro Jöhncke, Director, Head of Corporate Communications & CSR at Dampskibsselskabet NORDEN, told Ship & Bunker that the company had joined Trident Alliance - a move intended to lend support to NORDEN's push for fair competition within the shipping industry in the context of tightening regulations on sulfur in bunkers.
