Navigator Gas has announced that it has taken delivery of a newbuild hybrid ethane/ethylene carrier, which is capable of running on both liquefied natural gas (LNG), methane, HFO, and MGO.

"The main engine is the most fuel efficient 2-stroke engine on the market designed with a high pressure gas injection system. This selection of engine and fuel gas system allow the ship to be extremely fuel efficient both when using normal fuels as well as when using LNG," explained Navigator Gas.

The company also says it is in the "very advanced" stages of equipping the vessel to burn ethane (C2) as a third alternative fuel.

"This will allow even greater economies for our customers as there is a choice of also using cargo as fuel when carrying ethane, which has only been possible on a few number of vessels in the past," added Navigator Gas.

The newly-built Navigator Aurora is noted to have a carrying capacity of 37,300 cbm, holding up to 20,000 tonnes of ethane/ethylene, a feature that the company says makes it the largest ethane/ethylene-capable vessel within the global market.

The vessel is said to have been delivered at Shanghai's Jiangnan Shipyard on August 2, and is the first of four such ethane/ethylene carriers slated to be delivered to Navigator Gas.

Navigator Aurora is said to be under a minimum 10 year charter to Borealis, and will be employed on a U.S. East Coast to Europe service beginning in 2016's fourth quarter 2016.

In July, MAN Diesel & Turbo SE (MAN) announced that Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES) had completed the world's first ME-GIE ethane-operated two-stroke diesel engine, which it said will give operators increased flexibility in selecting a marine fuel.
