AS Tallink Grupp (Tallink) Friday said its "New Generation" Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)-powered ferry will bring a "significant improvement in energy efficiency" despite fast sailing speeds.

The company said the new 49,000 gross tonne ferry would sail at 27 knots, but that a range of measures would see the ferry still operating efficiently in terms of fuel consumption.

"Highly innovative hull form design minimizes the flow resistance and ensures that the ship operates well in ice conditions," said Tallink.

In addition, "efficient and fast cargo turnaround in ports has been taken into account in the design of the new generation fast ferry," said the company.

In December, Tallink announced it had signed an agreement with Meyer Turku Oy to construct the 2800-passenger vessel for roughly €230 million ($285 million).

The ferry will operate between Helsinki and Tallinn, entirely within the European Emissions Control Area (ECA), thus the use of LNG as a marine fuel will also enable compliance with new sulfur rules in force since January 1.

The new ferry will be ready by 2017.

In December, Tallink announced it had signed an agreement with Neste Oil for the supply of ECA-compliant 0.10%S marine diesel oil (MDO) when calling Finnish ports.
