Petroleum Company of Trinidad and Tobago Limited (Petrotrin) is working to contain a 20,000 gallon bunker fuel from its Point-a-Pierre refinery, local media reports.

The spill, which occurred Sunday afternoon, is said to have been caused by a ruptured storage tank.

"In addition to escalating its ongoing containment, monitoring and testing activities, personnel were engaged in the conduct of aerial surveys to ascertain the extent of the spill. Specialist cleaning contractors have been engaged and as a precautionary measure booms have been deployed," said Petrotrin in a statement issued today.

The Environmental Management Authority (EMA) has said it plans to provide further updates after consultation with Petrotrin, the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries (MEEI), and EMA's Emergency Response and Investigations (ERI) team.
