The Petroleum Company of Trinidad and Tobago Limited (Petrotrin) says "significant" progress has been made in the recovery and clean-up of a bunker spill at Pointe-a-Pierre.

As Ship & Bunker reported last week, Petrotrin has been working to contain the 20,000 gallon bunker fuel spill from its Point-a-Pierre refinery, which is said to have been caused by a ruptured storage tank.

"We recognise and share the concern of the national community for the impact of last Sunday's incident and appreciate the support extended from stakeholders for our continued efforts to manage, contain and resolve this situation," stated Petrotrin Saturday.

On Sunday, Petrotrin explained that, despite response efforts at the time of the spill, some of the pollution escaped the primary containment and entered the sea, stretching into Venezuelan waters.

Various containment and recovery measures are said to have been implemented in response to the spill, and Petrotrin says it is working closely with the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries.

Petrotrin’s Venezuelan counterpart, PetrĂ³leos de Venezuela S.A. (PDVSA), is said to be set to treat with the spill in Venezuelan waters.

"Aerial surveys conducted both on Friday and yet again today reveal that there are no new sightings of oil outside of that contained by the booms," Petrotrin stated Sunday.
