Bunker sales in Panama during the first half of 2017 have risen 23.6 percent year-on-year, according to the latest data from the Panama Maritime Authority (AMP).

Sales for all products during the six months to June totalled 2,416,092 metric tonnes (mt), compared to 1,954,767 mt for the period in 2016.

Of the total, 1,875,837 mt was sold in Balboa on the country's Pacific coast, while the Atlantic coast with the port of Cristobal supplied 540,255 mt.

Fuel oil accounted for 2,232,360 mt of total 1H 2017 sales, and distillates the 183,732 mt balance.

AMP data also showed the number of bunkering operations during the period rose to 2,991, compared to 2,641 last year, meaning the average stem size was up to 808 mt compared to 740 mt in 2016.

The lift in sales volumes comes as the country last month celebrated the one year anniversary of the opening of the Expanded Panama Canal.
