An oil tanker Sunday exploded outside China's Zhanjiang port with rescue and clean up operations continuing, Seatrade Global reports.

The tanker, Run Guang 9, exploded after a cargo hold caught fire during a voyage between Zhuhai and Zhanjiang ports.

According to the report, authorities said measures have been taken to clean up water pollution but no further details were given.

More than 10 rescue vessels are also understood to have been deployed to the scene.

It is believed that 14 crew were aboard with only 12 having been reported rescued.

Zhanjiang Maritime Safety Administration has said that the fire has now been extinguished.

Last year a fatal tanker explosion occurred off the coast of Hyogo Prefecture in western Japan.
