Swedegas AB (Swedegas) today announced that, "primarily to meet the need in the shipping industry for a more environmentally friendly fuel," the company is investing in new liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure at the Port of Gothenburg.

"This is the first LNG facility in Gothenburg, the largest port in Scandinavia, making it possible for vessels to bunker LNG at the quayside while loading and unloading," said Swedegas of the facility that is expected to be fully operational in 2018.

Johan Zettergren, CEO of Swedegas, commenting on the development, said: "this investment marks the starting point for the gradual expansion of the facility, eventually supplying the transport sector and Swedish industry with liquefied gas. Regardless of the sector, it ultimately comes down to making the transition from oil-based products."

The facility, which has received EU support through the Innovation and Networks Executive Agency (INEA), is noted to include a discharge station, a cryogenic pipeline, and bunkering equipment.

"We have for a long time believed in LNG as the fuel of the future. This investment by Swedegas is entirely in line with our ambition to reduce the environmental impact of shipping and establish a sustainable Scandinavian freight hub," said Magnus Kårestedt, CEO of the Gothenburg Port Authority.
