Imtech Marine Opens Green Ship Centre
Rotterdam-based Imtech Marine (Imtech) announced Tuesday it has opened a global "Competence Centre" in Hamburg to provide environmentally friendly ship systems.
The company said it wants to become one of the top three independent green technology marine suppliers by 2015.
Imtech says with increasing regulations demanding more sustainable, less polluting ships, it is offering a holistic approach that includes analyzing systems for automation, electricity and lighting, communications and navigation, HVAC, and shore connections.
The company says it has studied many state-of-the-art ships and found they could reduce their use of electricity by as much as 60 percent, saving money as well as reducing environmental impacts.
"For the customer to contribute to a healthier environment and at the same time to improve business it is necessary to take a holistic approach to the ship," said Stephan Claussen, the head of the new centre.
Imtech already makes a diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system for seagoing ferries which is projected to reduce their fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by at least 20 percent.
The system, which Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd. of Scotland is using in two new ferries, was recently nominated for a Dutch Maritime Innovation Award.
Last year, Wärtsilä Corp. of Norway announced the creation of its own global competence centre on the Norwegian island of Stord to advance its diesel-electric propulsion systems technology.
