Wärtsilä Friday said it will supply three more hybrid exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbers) to Finnlines Plc (Finnlines) under a contract set for the third quarter of 2015, and with the equipment scheduled for delivery in early 2016.

Finnlines placed a similar order in 2014, when it had six of its ships fitted with Wärtsilä's scrubbers.

"We are very pleased to call on Wärtsilä again to provide us with the latest emissions abatement technology and know-how," said Tapani Voionmaa, Group General Counsel, Finnlines.

"This is an important step towards having our entire Baltic fleet scrubber equipped and in fully operational service."

Wärtsilä says the scrubber selected for installation on the three vessels is Wärtsilä's hybrid in-line scrubber system, which is capable of operating in both open and closed loop modes, noting that the compact in-line version is space and weight efficient.

"Repeat orders are always very satisfying as they represent confirmation that the performance of the systems delivered earlier fully meets the owners' needs and expectations," said Juha Kytölä, Vice President, Environmental Solutions, Wärtsilä.

"Wärtsilä is the market leader in scrubber systems for marine applications. We have a very strong track record in enabling ship owners and operators to comply with all SOx emission regulations."

In June, it was reported that the Grimaldi Group had ordered its tenth installation of Alfa Laval's PureSOx scubber solution for a Finnlines vessel, the fifth Finnlines vessel to receive the scrubber solution.

In July, Interferry announced that five of its members, including Finnlines, will receive €48 million ($53.09 million) in grants from the European Union (EU) to offset the cost of installing exhaust scrubber systems for compliance with Emissions Control Area (ECA) rules.
