European Union (EU) transport ministers, who met in Valletta, Malta this week, have voiced support for the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to lead action on reducing shipping industry emissions, IHS Fairplay reports.

The ministers are said to have urged EU member states, as well as the European Commission (EC) to work in cooperation with IMO to develop an effective strategy for greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction in 2018.

As Ship & Bunker reported in February, Members of European Parliament (MEPs) voted in favour of the inclusion of shipping emissions in the EU's Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) from 2023 if the IMO does not have a comparable system operating for global shipping from 2021.

Earlier this month, Jos Delbeke, Head of the EC Climate Action Department, said MEPs have sent a "clear signal of their frustration that work on a global objective isn't going fast enough," referring to steps taken by IMO on global shipping emissions.
