London-based cruise operator Noble Caledonia has announced that Gibraltar will become a turnaround port during the 2016 cruise season, positioning the port for more bunkering opportunities, Gibraltar media reports

Gibraltar is expected to become the turnaround port for two of the Serenissima's voyages in October and November 2016.

The plans have been a goal for some time, said the government, having made efforts to establish upgraded facilities at the cruise terminal.

"This is a major breakthrough for us, which underlines the untiring efforts of the Gibraltar Tourist Board and our other partners and stakeholders in the private sector," said Minister for Tourism Samantha Sacramento.

"I am confident this will trigger further interest from other cruise operators to follow Noble Caledonia's example and that Gibraltar's position as cruise port and turnaround port will be further enhanced in the not too distant future."

Earlier this year, it was also reported that the country's government has been locked in a months-long conflict with its official opposition party over potential liquefied natural gas projects
