Compañía Española de Petróleos, S.A.U. (Cepsa) today announced that, in 2018, it will become the first company with the capacity to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) via ship-to-ship operations in Spain with its Mediterranean Multi-product Barge at the Port of Barcelona.

The announcement came alongside news that Cepsa presented a paper at Tokyo's Gastech 2017 that highlights LNG as the fuel for maritime transport "with the greatest growth potential within the global market" due to its safety, availability, and price

"For LNG to attain a position of leadership as the main fuel for maritime transport on a global scale, it is essential that the players involved in its management – ship owners, authorities, distributing companies, infrastructure operators, etc., – work on its development in a coordinated manner," said Antonio Melcón, the CEO of Cepsa Gas Comercializadora (CGC).

Melcón says CGC aims to reinforce its position as a major supplier in Spain by increasing its sales of LNG bunkers.

"Thanks to our management capacity, Cepsa has become a world benchmark in the supply of LNG to ships," added Melcón.

As Ship & Bunker reported in September, Cepsa announced plans to operate the first multi-product barge in Europe - part of the European Commission (EC)-supported Core LNGas Hive initiative.
