Lorenzo Matacena, administrator at Caronte & Tourist S.p.A. (Caronte & Tourist), has announced a new €200 million investment to build ten new ferries powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) over the next ten years, Italian media reports.

Despite current Italian regulations related to LNG bunkering and a lack of supporting infrastructure, Matacena says LNG is "certainly the future of shipping."

In November, Ship & Bunker reported that LMG Marin had signed a contract with Caronte & Tourist to design a large double-ended LNG-powered ferry - a vessel LMG said would be the first LNG-fuelled ferry on the Mediterranean Sea.
