A new integrated product allows vessels to seamlessly shift from heavy fuel oil (HFO) to marine gas oil (MGO) with 0.1 percent sulfur content to meet coming emissions standards in Emission Control Areas (ECAs), fuel oil supply systems maker Auramarine said in an emailed press release.

The package includes a fuel oil supply unit, a system for cooling marine gas oil to achieve the appropriate viscosity for the ship engines, and the Auramarine Fuel Selector, which permits automatic change-over between the fuels while keeping the fuel entering the engine from changing temperature too quickly.

"A switch from HFO to MGO or vice versa takes place automatically and in such a manner that the lubrication of the ship's engines is ensured in every phase," the company said.

Auramarine said its technology is appropriate for both newbuilds and retrofits.

The Fuel Selector also saves data and converts it to reports for use by the owner or operator and by regulating authorities, while also allowing the ship's crew to monitor data in real time.

With the 0.1 percent sulfur limit set to take effect in ECAs in the Baltic Sea, the North Sea, the English Channel, and North America in 2015, a variety of new solutions are coming on the market to help ship owners and operators meet the forthcoming requirements, including fuel scrubbers and fuel blending systems.
